How To Take Control Of Your Goals

May 11, 2023

Do you feel like May just snuck up on you? I’m already asking myself where the year has gone. We’re officially a third of the way through Q2. Crazy, right?! Never fear! it’s not too late to have a great quarter.

If you didn’t already plan out Q2, I want to invite you to take 1.5-2 hours over the next 10 days to do so. Yes, I know it’s graduation/vacation/prom/wedding/busy season for just about everyone so your time is scarce. But that’s why it’s even more important that you take the time to do this. With the summer coming down the line faster than a subway, you don’t have the luxury of wasting mental calories. When you get into the office for a quick work sprint, you don’t want to guess what you should be working on–you need to reference your already prepared to-do list and get things done.

So, here’s the challenge.

Schedule a time over the next 10 days to do a quick mini-review of Q1 and plan Q2. Boo, I’m talking literally. Right now. Pull up your Google calendar and find a 1.5-2 hour pocket of time and schedule a time to get this all planned out.

Did you do it? Yay! Bonus points, my friend. You get a gold star. 🌟

You’ve done your part by scheduling a time on your calendar to review Q1 and plan Q2. So I want to make sure you get the most out of your time. When you get into the office or your favorite spot to plan with all your favorite planning materials, here’s what I recommend you do:

  1. Set a date to review the previous quarter and plan the next (I recommend 7-14 days before the coming quarter)
  2. Review the previous (current) quarter
    • What goals did you complete?
      • What enabled you to do this?
    • What goals did you miss?
      • Can you identify why you didn’t reach them?
    • Do any of the goals you missed need to go on the upcoming quarter’s goals or simply be removed from your to-do list?
    • What went well?
    • What needs to change?
  3. Review the schedule for the upcoming quarter
    • Personal
    • Work commitments
    • Schedule a day to review the upcoming quarter (I like to do this 7-14 days before the quarter starts)
    • Schedule margin
  4. Based on your financial needs, time, and schedule, select your goals for the upcoming quarter
    • Break your goals down into actionable steps that can be done in a day or less
  5. Write down your definition of success for good, better, and best quarter
  6. How are you going to celebrate reaching your goals?
    • You see, as business owners, we often reach goals and then move on to the next without hesitation. We have no time to talk, I’ve got a “world to conquer ” attitude. 😉 This keeps us from recognizing how far we’ve come. It’s important to take time to celebrate–the big things and the little things. So pause, take a quick moment, and write down how you’re going to celebrate.
  7. Schedule a time to work on your quarterly goals each week
  8. Share your goals with your accountability partner or group

Friend, I’m cheering for you as build a business that supports a life you love!
